Bruno Winawer o tęsknocie. Analiza wybranych utworów
Abstract
The author presents the functions of longing and the ways in which it is represented on the example of a few selected works by Bruno Winawer, an artist who made his debut in the Young Poland period and whose popularity and critical acclaim in the interwar period was ensured primarily by his dramas and columns. The author used texts from the initial and final phases of Winawer's work, the plays: Niziny [Lowlands] (1910), The Book of Job (1921), Ryk byłego lwa [The Roar of the Former Lion] (1936) and Żywy Ładunek [The Living Load] (1938), as well as a poem published in 'Chimera' (1907) as analytical material.
By analysing Winawer's works, the author was able to diagnose longing as a consequence of feeling a lack or experiencing a loss, which led to distinguishing two types of longing: longing for something (longing spurs them to action, which is often almost exclusively limited to the realisation of a goal located in the indefinite future, which is not always clearly specified) and longing after the loss of something (people are passive, discouraged, embittered). The characters' longing is revealed in their words, behaviour and the way they perceive the world, although the power of experiencing it is also influenced by the current environment and the setting of the depicted world. In her article, the author also reflects on the longing revealed in Winawer's biography.
